Rivers and shorelines

Water is the other half of a lot of prairie photographs. The rivers, lakes, and marshes all hold the sky, and on a still morning they double it.

These were made across Manitoba in every season, from sunrise fog and autumn shorelines to frosted riverbanks, spring flooding, and winter ice. The best light is usually the first hour after sunrise, before the wind roughens the surface.

Calm water is the point of most of these. I wait for the wind to drop, shoot low to the surface, and let the reflection do half the work.
