Country roads and fields

The roads out here run straight for kilometres, and they are the best way I know to see how big the prairie is. A gravel grid road disappearing into a sunset, a highway under a storm, a double rainbow over a farm lane: the road gives the eye somewhere to go, and the sky does the rest.

Beside the roads are the fields, and they change with the season. Green wheat in June, canola in full yellow bloom in July, and sunflowers turning toward the light in August each rewrite the colour of the whole horizon. I keep going back to the same stretches of road to see what the crops are doing.

Most of these were made from the roadside, often near the end of the day when the light turns and the clouds start to build. Deer, tractor tracks, and the odd transport truck turn up in the frame now and then, and they are a reminder that this is working land.
