Beaver
Wet fur glowing in the low evening light, a beaver pauses at the water’s edge, one of Manitoba’s hardest-working builders.
Beavers are the largest rodents in North America, with dense waterproof fur, webbed back feet, and a broad, flat tail. They fell trees and build dams and lodges that create wetlands for countless other animals. They are most active at dusk and after dark, which is why the best chances to see them come in the last light of the evening.
This is a favourite frame of a beaver, grooming at the water’s edge in evening light.
