Evening grosbeak

Male evening grosbeak with yellow and black plumage and a large pale bill perched among new spring leaves, Manitoba

The evening grosbeak is a stocky finch with a huge, pale bill. Males like this one are rich yellow and black, with a bold yellow eyebrow and a large white patch on each wing.

Evening grosbeaks roam in flocks to find seeds and buds, and they visit feeders for sunflower seeds. This male was photographed in spring among new leaves.

I love the bold yellow, black, and white of an evening grosbeak, plus the heavy pale bill built for cracking seeds.
