American pipit

American pipit photographed in Manitoba

The American pipit is a slim, ground-feeding songbird with a thin bill, buff underparts, and fine streaks across the breast. It walks rather than hops, and it bobs its tail as it goes.

It nests on the arctic tundra and in high mountains, and in Manitoba it is mostly seen during migration. Look for it along muddy shorelines, in wet fields, and on bare ground.

I like how its soft buff and grey colours blend into the dry reeds it was walking through.
