Cape May warbler

Cape May warbler photographed in Manitoba

The Cape May warbler is a small warbler with a chestnut cheek patch, a bright yellow neck, and heavily streaked yellow underparts. Its fine, slightly curved bill is well suited to picking insects from branches and sipping nectar.

It breeds in northern spruce forests, and in Manitoba it is mostly seen during migration in spring and fall. Look for it in the tops of trees and in tangles of reeds along wet areas.

I like this photograph for the moment of takeoff, with the wings still spread among the reeds.
