Richardson’s ground squirrel

Richardson’s ground squirrel is a small, burrowing prairie rodent, often seen standing beside its den and watching for danger.

Often called a gopher on the Prairies, it lives in colonies in open grassland and pasture, and it hibernates through the winter.

I enjoy how a Richardson’s ground squirrel stands upright like a little sentry at the edge of its burrow.
