Hermit thrush

Hermit thrush perched on a branch in woodland

The hermit thrush is a shy woodland songbird, brown above with a rusty tail and a spotted breast, and it is usually glimpsed low in the understory.

It is best known for its clear, flute-like song, and it often flicks its tail upward slowly after landing.

I love how a hermit thrush melts into the shadows of the woods, with its rusty tail as the one bright clue that gives it away.
