Common yellowthroat

Male common yellowthroat singing from a dry stem

The common yellowthroat is a small, active warbler, and the male wears a black mask edged in white above a bright yellow throat.

It lives in cattails, tall grass, and thick wetland edges, where it skulks low and sings a rolling “wichity-wichity-wichity” song.

Nothing beats the bandit mask of a male yellowthroat, which gives such a small bird a great deal of character.
