Clay-colored sparrow

Clay-colored sparrow perched on a spruce branch showing a brown cheek patch and grey nape, Manitoba

The clay-colored sparrow is a small, neat prairie sparrow with a brown crown streaked with black, a pale line down the centre, a grey nape, and a brown cheek patch bordered in darker brown.

It nests in shrubby prairie and brushy fields, and its song is a series of dry, buzzy notes. This one perched on a spruce branch to look around.

I appreciate the quiet, tidy look of a clay-colored sparrow, with its pale crown stripe and soft, buzzing song.
