Flowers

Manitoba’s flowers are small enough to overlook and complicated enough to keep you looking. Up close, a bud, a petal, or a thistle head turns into structure, colour, and pattern that you would never see from standing height.

I photograph them in soft light, often after rain, when water droplets sit on the petals like tiny lenses. Lady’s slippers, garden blooms, and roadside weeds are all fair game, and I like to give the flower a dark or quiet background so that the detail is the only thing in the frame.

A macro lens turns an ordinary patch of garden or ditch into a place worth exploring, and flowers hold still long enough to let me take my time.
